Kapitel 7: Menschen im Regenwald
Die tropischen Regenwälder sind seit langem der Lebensraum indigener Völker; sie haben Zivilisationen und Kulturen gestaltet, die auf den Gegebenheiten, in denen sie leben, beruhen. Große Zivilisationen wie die der Mayas, Inkas und Azteken haben komplexe Gesellschaften entwickelt und große Beiträge zur Wissenschaft geleistet. Da sie von der Natur leben und ihnen die Technologie dazu fehlt, ihre Umwelt zu beherrschen, haben es die Ureinwohner gelernt, ihre Umgebung zu beobachten und die Komplexitäten des Regenwalds zu verstehen. Über Generationen hinweg haben diese Menschen gelernt, wie wichtig es ist, als Teil der Umwelt zu leben, und sind dazu gelangt, auf die zahllosen nachwachsenden Ertragsmöglichkeiten zu bauen, die die Wälder bieten.
